Malia Hayes
Malia Hayes is a summer intern through Partner4Work Learn & Earn Corporate Internship Program at Master Builders’ Association of Western Pennsylvania (MBA) and a full-time student at Hampton University pursuing a career in architecture. She recently completed her first year with a 3.21 GPA while being on the Dean’s List.
Ms. Hayes spent multiple summers working at Drafting Dreams through Learn & Earn’s general program. There she learned how to use SketchUp and make floorplans and street layouts. Christian Hughes introduced her to the work that goes into being an architect. Hughes being the owner of Drafting Dreams taught her the basic skills to start her journey in architecture and introduced her to Hampton University. Her extensive background in engineering and mathematics, combined with her ability to build strong partnerships across the STEAM field, has delivered powerful results throughout the start of her career.
Having a childhood surrounded by the STEAM industry has exposed Hayes firsthand to the lack of representation for minority women, where she hopes to be a face of encouragement in helping young women and girls consider a career in STEAM. Being an intern at MBA has put her a step closer in her goal along with introducing Ms. Hayes to the trade community where she plans to take what she learned from her time at MBA and use that knowledge in the future and at school to get an internship at a construction company next summer.
Hayes graduated Taylor Allderdice High School with a 4.3 GPA while being in the MAGNET program, enrolled in honor and AP classes, and taking dual enrollment courses at Carlow University and the Community College of Allegheny County. She is currently on a track to receive her master’s degree and license in architecture at Hampton University in 2027.
