When Ms. Taylor, a 33-year-old mother with three children, enrolled in the EARN program, she shared that a barrier to meeting her career goals was the lack of having a driver's license. She was able to secure employment with Securitas as a Security Officer. To retain her job, her employer requested that she obtain her driver’s license and have a reliable means of transportation. During her time in the EARN Program at EDSI, Ms. Taylor’s case manager connected her to Traveler’s Aid of Pittsburgh, a non-profit United Way agency that assists income eligible persons with employment opportunities through transportation services and resources. Traveler’s Aid connected her with a local training provider to receive free driving lessons. After participating in the lessons, Ms. Taylor passed her license exam on the first try. She went on to purchase her own vehicle. Ms. Taylor states that having a driver's license gives her stability in her job and a new sense of freedom. With her license, she can remain successful at her job while remaining mindful of advancement opportunities in employment. Now, Ms. Taylor also realizes that she is able to do more with and for her children.
