Unique Teaching Model Demonstrated by Neighborhood Learning Alliance and Partner4Work

Ninety-five percent pass rate achieved

PITTSBURGH – A unique college credit model was showcased today by the summer Learn & Earn program, sponsored by Allegheny County, the City of Pittsburgh, and Partner4Work. This model, funded by JP Morgan Chase, the City of Pittsburgh Mayor's Office, and other sponsors, combines an immersive college learning experience, including tutoring, and worksite placement.

Three to four credits are earned in studies in healthcare, tech, business/marketing, education, social justice, the arts, and community service. Students have access to up to five university professors. This has lead to a ninety-five percent pass rate. Showcased at Carlow today was the college professor's teaching relationship with the high school students and student feedback on their experiences.

According to Kashif Henderson, Executive Director, Neighborhood Learning Alliance, “The partnership gives an opportunity for students to pursue their dreams and aspirations of college early. It addresses key areas of need for the City of Pittsburgh and gives students a chance to explore talents and skills.”

Professor Beth Zamboni, PhD, Mathematics and Data Analytics, Carlow University, said the course “gives students an opportunity to have a college experience in an environment not as pressure-packed as carrying a full load of credits.“ She added, “It’s a nice introduction to a course to get their feet wet and to give them confidence they can handle a college-level course.”

The summer Learn & Earn program is open to young people ages 14 to 21 who meet certain income and residency requirements. They are matched to job opportunities based on interest, experience, and skills. Young people work at sites across the county in corporations, nonprofits, and community-based organizations.
